Carbon 60 May Help Prevent Cancer, Inflammation, be Neuroprotective, Protect Against Radiation and Prolong Life
This interesting Carbon 60 research began when I read a paper from 2012 published in the scientific journal Biomaterials. The publication entitled, ‘The prolongation of the lifespan of rats by repeated oral administration of fullerene’ by Baati et al., reported that feeding middle aged rats a solution of Carbon 60 in olive oil extended their lifespans by an average of 90% and none contracted cancer! Additionally, they injected a toxin (carbon tetrachloride, which causes oxidative liver damage) into the rats and those fed Carbon 60 in olive oil were protected!
Searching Pubmed at the NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information), one comes across several Carbon 60 related publications supporting extension of lifespan and protection from cancer. In 2008, researchers observed extension of lifespan in mice as well as improved cognition 'A carboxyfullerene SOD mimetic improves cognition and extends the lifespan of mice' (link). A snippet from their summary: ‘This is to our knowledge the first demonstration that an administered antioxidant with mitochondrial activity and nervous system penetration not only increases lifespan, but rescues age-related cognitive impairment in mammals.‘
The mechanism of action of Carbon 60 has not been fully elucidated and perhaps there are more than one. It is proposed that Carbon 60 molecules act as antioxidants, donating electrons in cells and also in the mitochondria where reactive oxygen species (ROS, which are free radical forms of oxygen molecules) are formed. By neutralizing free radicals at the site where reactions occur (mitochondria), there is less chance of cells becoming damaged or cancerous, allowing your immune system to perform efficiently. And so, it is hypothesized that one of the ways Carbon 60 works is as a mitochondrial oxidant, neutralizing ROS damage. These actions may bring older (inefficient) or damaged mitochondria back into balance, which can aid the immune system and may result in a reduction of inflammation and prevention of radical induced cancers and other diseases like Alzhiemer's.
As one digs into scientific publications and medical literature, one can find researchers reporting evidence that Carbon 60 olive oil solution and derivatives in rats and mice protect against radiation (Link), crosses the blood brain barrier (Link), is neuroprotective (Link) and may be useful for treating Alzheimer’s disease (Link). In this study showing a Carbon 60 derivative providing neuroprotection (Link), researchers noted 'Our data suggest that carboxyfullerenes have a neuroprotective effect in preventing iron-induced oxidative injury in CNS.'
Carbon 60 may enhance Autophagy
This interesting report shows evidence that Carbon 60 may enhance autophagy (Link). Autophagy means ‘self-eating’ and is the normal process in which cells break down cellular components and older non efficient or damaged organelles in order to build new organelles for example. In many diseases, mutated or mis-folded proteins can get stuck in the ER (endoplasmic reticulum, the organelle which synthesizes, modifies and folds proteins) or Golgi apparatus (the Golgi modifies proteins from the ER and tags vesicles so they can be transported to the proper target), blocking up pathways for cellular functions causing inflammation and other issues. In many cases when autophagy is increased, disease phenotypes improve as these organelles are cleared of mis-folded proteins faster and can function properly. It may be that Carbon 60 enhances autophagy as well as mitophagy, clearing out older impaired proteins, organelles and mitochondria faster, allowing anabolic processes to build new organelles and mitochondria efficiently. Essentially, this may give the immune system a boost and can reduce inflammation.
Carbon 60 derivatives reduce Inflammation and Arthritis
In a 2013 article, researchers concluded that a Carbon 60 derivative prevents inflammation in mice by inhibiting IL-1 (interleukin 1), matrix metalloproteinases and TNF-α (Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha) (Link). In a 2007 article concerning inflammation, researchers conclude that Carbon 60 has a beneficial affect on osteoarthritis. They report that Carbon 60 prevents stress-induced damage, the loss of bone cells and prevents bone inflammation in rabbits (Link). Researchers in a 2015 study tested various Carbon fullerenes and derivatives on arthritic mice (Link). They concluded that Carbon 60 fullerene derivatives, "May hold promise both as an assessment tool and as anti-inflammatory therapy of arthritis.'' In another study published in 2016, scientists concluded that fullerene C60 has anti-inflammatory effects in mice (Link).
Carbon 60 may protect against Radiation
There is an abundance of research looking into the effects of EMR (Electro Magnetic Radiation) from cell towers, cell phones and other devices, wi-fi, and Smart meters. They have found that this radiation is causing an increase in the creation of free radicals and oxidative stress leading to health problems in humans and animals. Researchers propose that taking antioxidants like Vitamin C, Vitamin A and Vitamin E will reduce oxidative stress and therefore associated health problems.
Propelling Wellness Research recommends Carbon 60 in olive oil in addition to other antioxidants for protection against EMR, which research over the past 20 plus years has shown causes formation of free radicals in humans and animals.
Thanks to Henry Lai, you can find research showing EMR from cell towers, wi-fi, cell phones, smart meters and computer screens may cause oxidative stress, tumors/cancer and other health issues: BioInitiative Report.

Scientists in 2010 concluded that a Carbon 60 derivative provides protection against radiation (by antioxidant properties reducing oxidative stress) in human and rat cells (Link). This quote can be found in their abstract, 'Taken together, these results suggest that DF-1 provides powerful protection against several deleterious cellular consequences of irradiation in mammalian systems including oxidative stress, DNA damage, and cell death. ' DF-1 is a Carbon 60 derivative. Researchers in this 2006 Clinical Cancer Research article (Link) described DF-1 as a fullerene with antioxidant properties and they tested the effect of ionizing radiation. Here is a quote from their conclusions noting the benefit of DF-1 fullerenes, "The fullerene DF-1 protects zebrafish embryos against deleterious effects of ionizing radiation due, in part, to its antioxidant properties.''
In this novel 2019 publication (Link), researchers show evidence of the radiation protective effects of Carbon 60 on mice. In these experiments, mice were irradiated and those treated with Carbon 60 were protected. Researchers noted Carbon 60 as a "novel antioxidant and radioprotective agent capable of substantial reduction of the harmful effects of ionizing radiation."
Many researchers report that Carbon 60 is non-toxic (Link) and has anti-cancer properties (Link). The majority of small molecules I’ve worked with in animals or cell assays have toxic and lethal doses, I was interested to learn that Carbon 60 had no reported toxicity (Link) and a lethal dose could not be found. Experiments in the 2012 Baati publication were designed to find a lethal dose and none was achieved (Link). Additionally, in my experience in the Biopharma industry I observe that elucidating the lowest efficacious dose is the main goal for therapeutics (besides safety!). I have not found any research looking for a minimum efficacious dose or dose dependent efficacy as of Spring 2020.
Here are some Carbon 60 conclusions on rodents and rabbits from scientific literature:
· Carbon 60 is the most powerful antioxidant discovered, 172x’s more potent than Vitamin C.
· Antioxidants like Carbon 60 neutralize cancer causing free radicals.
· Carbon 60 molecules cross the blood brain barrier and are neuroprotective. They act on cell and organelle membranes where they exercise antioxidant protection on cells, lipids, genomic and mitochondrial DNA.
· Carbon 60 is non-toxic as evidenced by the many rat and mouse studies which were unable to find a toxic or lethal dose.
· Carbon 60 has been repeatedly shown to increase lifespan in rodents and other organisms.
· Carbon 60 protects mice from radiation.
· Carbon 60 protects mice from toxins such as heavy metals (Cadmium).
· Carbon 60 may improve the immune system and inflammation by stopping free radical damage.
· Carbon 60 may increase autophagy.
· Carbon 60 may be so powerful partly due to its small size increasing its biodistribution, reaching locations other antioxidants and medicines cannot.
Due to its capacity to donate/accept electrons, Carbon 60 is known as a free radical scavenger which may be:
· Radiation protective
After taking Carbon 60 in olive oil, people are reporting:
· Reduction in arthritis
· Quicker recovery after working out
· Reduced pain and inflammation
· Less soreness after working out
· More endurance
The data on Carbon 60 being safe and non-toxic in rats and mice at extremely large oral doses qualifies it as safe enough for use. Different forms of carbon and charcoal have been safely consumed for millennia for many reasons. The rat and mouse trials show significant life extension and there is also evidence of extension of life in simple organisms. Using Carbon 60 olive oil for life extension has not been evaluated in humans and remains to be seen.
There may be several mechanisms of action for Carbon 60 on health and longevity including donating/accepting electrons to neutralize radicals. It may be that Carbon 60's powerful antioxidant properties can partly be attributed to its small size. Sixty Carbon molecules is quite small! Due to it being smaller than other antioxidant molecules, Carbon 60 may be able to reach cells and organelle membranes in locations that other antioxidants are unable to. Perhaps the Carbon 60 molecule has superior bio-distribution due to it being so small, making it such an effective antioxidant.
If you are waiting for a BioPharma sponsored human trial to show it is ok to ingest, you are likely to be waiting for a long, long time. Carbon 60 is made of a natural substance (Carbon!) that cannot be patented and so some big Pharma companies are not interested and do not always want you to know about medicines that are efficacious at possibly stopping a culprit associated with many diseases (ROS/free radicals).
